NotePane is a Chrome extension that stores your notes locally in your browser and syncs them to your own Google Drive. This page explains what data the extension and this companion viewer site handle, and what they don't.
What NotePane stores
Your notes (title and content) are stored locally in your browser's IndexedDB, and as one JSON
file per note inside a folder named NotePane that the extension creates in your own
Google Drive. Nothing is sent to, or stored on, any server operated by the developer — there is
no NotePane backend. The only two parties that ever see your note content are your browser and
Google Drive.
Google account access
NotePane uses Google Sign-In to connect to your Drive, requesting only the
drive.file scope. This scope limits the extension to files and folders it created
itself — it cannot see, read, or modify any other file already in your Drive.
Sharing a note
If you choose to share a note, NotePane sets a Google Drive permission on that specific file ("anyone with the link can view") and gives you a link to this viewer site. Anyone with that link can view the note by having their browser fetch the file directly from the Drive API, using a public, domain-restricted API key — the viewer has no server or database of its own, and the developer never sees or stores the shared content. Revoking a share removes the Drive permission, and the link stops working.
What we don't do
- No analytics, tracking, or advertising in the extension or this site.
- No account, email, or note content is collected or stored by the developer.
- No data is sold or shared with third parties.
Browser permissions
NotePane requests these Chrome extension permissions, used only for the stated purpose:
identity— Google sign-in.storage— saving your notes and settings locally.contextMenus— the "Save selection to note" right-click action.sidePanel— the side panel note view.alarms— periodic background sync with Drive.
Your control over your data
You can revoke NotePane's access at any time from your
Google Account permissions page. Deleting the NotePane folder in Drive removes your synced notes from Drive;
uninstalling the extension or clearing browser data removes your local copies. Signing out does
not delete any data.
Children's privacy
NotePane is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "last updated" date above will change accordingly.
